Broward County's 100 Greatest High School Football Players

Broward Greats: Tyrone Moss (Ely) & Michael Irvin (St. Thomas Aquinas)

Last night I released a list of Dade County's 100 greatest high school players. But let's not forget there's also some great football played north of the county line in The 954. Like the Dade County selections, this list of Broward greats is based strictly on high school career.

Last month former St. Thomas Aquinas star Michael Irvin was inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. He was the first Broward athlete to receive this honor and the third South Floridian, joining former Dade stars Ted Hendricks and Larry Little. Irvin is the biggest name on the list of past Broward high school superstars. Players are listed in alphabetical order with their school and graduation year.

Keith Wilkerson was a great HS football player, but has been in and out of jail for years now, and is in jail in 2009 again. He was a classmate of mine, and it was sad to see him pushed through classes just because he could play football and raise money for the school because of the trophys he would help bring. He went to Ohio State unable to read and of course dropped out after one year. Back to Fort Lauderdale with no education or skills, he went to crime. Sad because there was a good kid under all the hype and pressure. St Thomas should be ashamed for not helping his guy more in the 1990s, too late now, but if they really are a catholic school and practice what they preach, none of this would of happened? Or at least they would reach out to him, after all he helped St. Thomas win 3 state champs and loads of donor money, but is that was it was all about and not this kids life? End rant, god bless

Marty Butler-Boyd Anderson C/O 1986
He held the all-time rushing record when he graduated from BA. If he had the grades, there would be no Emmit Smith.

How does Marty Butler not make this list? I believe he finished his senior season as the all time leading rusher in county history. Yet Slip Watkins and Hyland Hickson make the list.

Unknown said...

Brad McKinney was also a great player at St. Thomas. Was to my knowledge, the first and only sophomore to start on varsity. Played with Slip Watkins and Tony Sands. Was on the original 4 horsmen 440 relay team with Slip and Tony.
He is sorly missed.

You left a lot of players off that were a lot better than some of the players you have on here. I played with most of these guys on here from 94-97 and a lot of these players do t even deserve to venom here. You left out Autry Denson, Quintin Chandler, Brian and Chris Hay, Ramone Witherspoon, Silverstee Johnson, McArthur Gordon. Melvin and Marcus Henderson, Isaac Woods, Thadius Nathaiel, Damon Cogdall, Benji Green, Vondrell, Kareem Gordon. You really messed up this list buddy.

Who broke county records? How could my team mate, Marty Butler, not be included in this group? Bogus list if you ask me..... I'm just saying.....

You didn't mention not one player from Dillards 85 team. That team is the best of all time in Broward hands down. And no Richard Strayhorn? And no Calvin Jackson? You mentioned Isaac Bruce he wasn't great till after high school but didn't mention Cliff Bostic the best WR to ever play at Dillard. Those Dillard teams in the Coach Grey era should have half this list and nobody should agrue that who knows football.

Chris isn’t my favorite person but he wasn’t trash. He wasn’t as good as Brian but he was nice. I don’t know you by name so you had to have come after me or you played with them at Miramar optimist or South Broward. And yes I named Miramar players that I compared by position to these guys on the list, and from 94-97 find a better DT than me and I’ll be quiet. My lil Cousin Ryan Hubbard didn’t even make this list. There’s a lot of D1 players all county and all digest players that didn’t make this list.

Unknown said...

This list as well as most list anywhere is comprised of players based on notoriety and popularity, yes there were guys that put up numbers but we're not selected, players with high football IQ's like myself, Archie Jones and Gary Shipman, all FAMU Rattlers, D 1 AA players are not hyped like the D1 players

unknown said...

Plantation RB's Keith Beard '94 and Len Cooper '92. Wow!!

unknown said...

University school '14 QB Sean White

What about Sterling Hicks WR for Ely High School. His catches and the yards after the catch was record breaking during his highschool time.
Pompano Beach Ely High(Fla.) wide receiver Sterling Hicks committed to North Carolina State. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound senior is considered one of the top receivers in the nation and chose N.C. State over FSU, Michigan State and Pittsburgh.

Tron Lafavor, Defensive Tackle- Dillard High School
Quinn Gray, Quarterback Dillard High School

Unknown said...

Keith Beard was the truth!

Unknown said...

That's right that kid o.c Owen chance out of Parkway! He was Too Legit to Quit I remember watching that kid play what a show! Wow!

Unknown said...

Bruce McGowan
This list should be based on statistics and not popularity because they went to a D1 school, Archie Jones of Dillard 1978 should have been on there. Alfredo Robert's drew the luck of the draw, he should not be on there, he has no stats, he got opportunities because of his size

93' 94' Broward County #1 defense Coconut Creek High School are you serious Ricky and Rocky Elorme Thaddeus Rawls Bubba Dwayne Watts their offense held them back but that defense was the best I've ever seen hands down. Ask any player in Broward from 92-94 about Creeks defense.. What about Bobby Battle? Moss was better than Bobby? Wooow are we talking high school or outta high school because those of us that actually played knows after high school it's all politics and business and family structure and ADVICE given to you.
